On August 1, North Delta Produce Growers Association, USDA, and Alcorn State University partnered together to present a Growers Meeting and Financial Management Workshop regarding Farm to School, the Strike Force Initiative, Veterans Initiatives, NRCS benefits, and Farm Management.
Presenters included: Charles Houston in a discussion of StrikeForce, Veterans Initiative, and Farm to School. Anthony Mason discussed the benefits of NRCS and the things farmers are eligible under the NRCS. Mason suggests that each farmer who goes into the USDA get a receipt of service to verify that they have been to visit.
Velma Oliver, a farm management and loan specialist with the Small Farm Loan Program at Alcorn State University Small Farm and Agribusiness Office, presented on farm financial management. Oliver discussed the benefits of keeping accurate records, specifically using an electronic program. Oliver also encouraged the farmers to complete an inventory of their assets on a regular basis and to keep all records in a secure location.
Oliver will return on August 22, 2013 for the second part of a three part series. She will provide hands-on training in financial management.
