Farmers Develop Strategy for Pea Production

Marks, MS–Local farmers met on June 27,2013 at the Justice Court Office in Marks, MS to discuss the upcoming purple hull pea production. This 2013 Purple Hull Pea Project ensures that local farmers have an opportunity to sell their produce at local grocery stores. This project is a collaboration between Wal-mart, Alcorn State University, and North Delta Produce Growers Association.

NDPGA board member Dietrich Johnson discussed the scope of the project as well as the importance of Good Agricultural Practice (GAP) and Good Handling Practices (GHP) throughout  pea production. This year, Walmart is requesting  5000 bushels of peas, a dramatic increase from the 1200 bushels Walmart requested last year.  “If we work together, we can get this done!” said Johnson. “We have people in place to help you if you need assistance.”

Approximately 10 NDPGA members were in attendance, with more planning to participate in the program.  For more information concerning the pea project, click here.
